OK, the pediatrician was pretty much useless and I'm so glad I saw the IA doctor. They basically just went straight off of what the IA doctor recommended as far as tests (they're ordering half of the tests now as they said it would be too much blood to draw to do them all), gave her a flu shot and tested for TB, and are getting me a referral to the pediatric opthamologist. As far as vaccinations, a do not have her record from Russia. It was in my hands at one point on trip 3 but from what I understand it was given to the US Embassy and put into that sealed envelope you hand them when you enter the US. I realize now I should have had a copy made somehow while I was in Russia, but I guess things were just too hectoc and I wasn't thinking clearly. I told the doctor to just do titers and she what she is immune to, but he said that will NOT tell them exactly which shots she has had (like how "many" measles shot for example) and he just wants to do them ALL again. I don't like that plan at all. So, did everyone else get a copy of their vaccination records and I just messed up already? I guess there is a way to try and get that copy back from USCIS....don't know how long that will take, but I'd rather spin my wheels doing that for a few months than ave them give her 2 yrs of shots all over again, which just doesn't sound healthy to me. Then, I guess I'll need to have them translated if I do actually get them back. Ugh, I made sure I got the vaccination records from the baby home, I just didn't make sure I actually ended up with a copy!!

It doesn't matter how many of each shot she's had if she's immune. Insist on titres. I've adopted twice, and I'm a nurse. My boys' regular pediatrician is one of the well known IA docs, and she does titres and then vaccinates according to those. If he absolutely refuses to do titres, ask the IA doc you saw to talk to him. Generally (and this is true of both of my boys), kids from Russia have had more vaccines than our American kids, and are still not always immune, b/c of poor quality vaccines. Best of luck. And congratulations on your beautiful girl!
Shelly ~ we were given a copy of Clara's vaccination record, in Russian! It took a week or so once we were home to have it translated (should have been done while we were in country). I have no idea what was given to the US Embassy.
Our pediatrican also recommends redoing all the shots, and we declined. We used the titres and only had to redo Hep. A. We were told she had Hep A vaccinations, but she was not immune.
BTW, Clara just had a second whooping cough shot ~ I think the pediatrican is totally paranoid about it since it is prevalent in LA.
I can't wait for our girls to get together ~ hopefully soon! Let's catch up in person.
Even though we had the vac record from Russia, our pediatrician still did tithers because she said a lot of times the records are inaccurate anyway. Good luck!
The bloodwork shows if the antibodies are there. . .get the titres. . .it worked for us! I had the sheet, but the bloodwork will show it.
Shelly can I have your e-mail I have questions?????
Had the records but still did the tithers. Also, our little one had chicken pox and there was no record, so the tither showed it. Our pediatrician never thought we should redo all vaccinations again. If you are not happy about the resistance you are encountering from the pediatrician, you might also consider finding a different one. Afterall your little one will be seeing him/her for many years and you need to feel confortable in his/her care.
Ugh...sorry your pedi is being a pain. In my opinion, I'd stick to your guns and insist on the titres...why give her unnecessary vax?
Also, there's a thread on FRUA about getting your immigration docs back, if it's something you're interested in...I can't figure out how to post a link, but here's the path you'd follow:
FRUA - Families For Russian and Ukrainian Adoption » Russia » I need help with getting my immigration docs returned
We did get the actual vaccination book for Colby. I was quite surprised. However, it shows vaccines were given to him that the titers test showed he wasn't immune to the disease. We had the doctor do the titers and then only repeat vaccines that didn't come up immune. The doctor wanted to do another chicken pox vaccine but I refused since we were told he had had chicken pox. You absolutely have the right to refuse to redo them. You might need to sign a paper for school records later but we haven't had that problem yet. Please keep us posted. I am interested to know how the eye doctor visit goes.

We also had some questionable/borderline results when the bloodwork was compared to the vaccination records. Leah's a bit more covered than Hope but Hope will need a couple redone here at home according to the IA doc. I ditto the folks who say to insist on the labwork.
I have never commented before but have enjoyed reading your blog. First of all huge congratulations on the arrival of your beautiful daughter. My son James came home from Russia July 3rd 09 and his head circumferance was also small, I think maybe smaller than your daughters but let me tell you he is a smart cookie. He also had/has the same issues eating, he is a great little eater but his food must still be mushed a bit to this day, but I dont mind once he is eating. Regarding shots, when I took James to an adoption specialist inially when he came home, from the blood work they were able to tell me and confirm what shots he had got. So don't worry about it all, it will all work itself out. You're doing great! Just enjoy!
Shelly, thanks for posting this question. We had Blake's records when we returned home, but I never felt comfortable with how our doctor handled those. Everyone's responses have helped me know what to do this time around. Best of luck getting through these months. I can tell you very soon that all of the running around and paperwork will slow down and you start to feel like you can live a 'normal' life. :0)
My pediatrician did the titres on Daniel and Maria. We didn't have to have everything. I did have the records....think they'd actually emailed some of them to me in the referral info. If it makes you feel any better, we haven't needed our medical records very much at all!
We got our daughter's shot records from her Baby Home in Russia. Our IA pediatrician recommended the titres testing and found that only her polio vaccine was not at "protective levels" - probably b/c it wasn't stored at the proper temp. However, the nurse had to take so much blood from her arms to do the titres (a HORRIBLE ordeal for a baby girl with rolling veins) that I couldn't help but wonder if re-doing all the shots (a few at a time) wouldn't have been easier on her.
P.S., you can get a copy of everything in the "secret" USCIS envelope simply by doing a freedom of information request. http://www.uscis.gov/files/form/G-884_11-03-08.pdf
